It all depends on the style/school and association etc. Here are a few examples, Tang Soo Do Assoc., white, orange, green, red and black (midnight blue) American Tang Soo Do, white, yellow, orange, green, brown and black.

If you just want colors in order: white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown and black. Some switch the purple and blue around while others may use red instead of brown.

In Shito-Ryu Karate, the order is white, orange, blue, purple, green, brown and black. Different styles hand out belts in different orders. The only constant is that white is lowest and black is highest. Some styles also have yellow and red belts which my style doesnt use.

It differs from what area of the world your system comes from, but most Karate ranking is as follows;white,yellow.blue,green.purple.brown.then Black and then it goes into degrees of black I am a San Dan which is 3rd degree black, master comes at 6th degree-Taekwondo,has different ranks,as well as Kung Fu,most other systems also have different ranks.

  • Neosamurai:

Depends on the style…in mine: white, yellow, green, blue, brown, red, black, 1st degree, 2nd, 3rd, 4th (master).

Any of those McDojos that make you test for a white belt or different stripes are just out to make money IMO.

As the others mentioned, you don’t specify which style you are practising. In my style, wado-ryu, the colours are:

    white
    yellow
    orange
    green
    blue
    purple
    brown 3rd kyu
    brown 2nd kyu
    brown 1st kyu
    black 1st dan
    etc…

    Hope that this helps!
