Taekkyon: Traditional Korean Martial Art
Taekkyon is a native Korean martial art that was nearly lost forever during the early 1900′s. Preserved by Grandmaster Song Duk-ki until his death, it is considered a Cultural Asset by the Korean government. The movements of Taekkyon are characterized by rhythmic beauty and grace that hide the deadly intent of its practitioners. In this DVD, filmed on location at the historical Korean Folk Village in Yongin, Grandmaster Lee Yong-bok, head of the Korea Taekkyon Association, and his National Demonstration Team present dynamic performances of Taekkyon at its best including: * Fundamentals and warm-up exercises* Footwork and Kicking Skills* Hand skills* 6 Types of Partner practice* Advanced kicking skills* Group kicking and technique practice* Basic and Advanced Taekkyon Forms* Kyo Roo Gi: Free Sparring* Interview with Grandmaster Lee Yong Bok* A brief history of Taekkyon* Philosophy of Taekkyon This DVD is a rare look at one of the oldest surviving Korean martial arts.

Kata and the Transmission of Knowledge: In Traditional Martial Arts
To truly understanding Kata means really knowing your history.
All too frequently, martial arts practitioners study their art without truly understanding where it comes from, how it was developed, and why it was created in the first place. Indeed, many don’t care – and if you feel this way, you should put this book down. For the rest of us, who have taken our art beyond tournaments, it is reasonable to expect that we want to uncover the past. We want to understand the where, why and how of martial art development. We are intellectually curious about our combative history.
To study the combative arts is to understand the circumstances of their development and to gain insights into the views and ethics of the societies that created them. As we travel back in time, we see consistent evidence of martial systems being influenced by those that came before and/or invaded. We also see the use of ‘pre-arranged’ fighting patterns kata to transmit proven techniques from one generation to the next.
It is this transmission of martial knowledge, through kata and other forms of communication, that this book will explore. The author will demonstrate that pre-arranged fighting techniques katas were used by ancient Greek, Egyptian, Asian, African and European societies. And that Poetry, Dance, and Song were also significant methods of preserving and transmitting battle-tested fighting tactics through the ages.
The purpose of kata training is not to become bound by the form but to transcend the form itself – to evolve.

Qigong: Traditional Chinese Exercises for Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit [VHS]
Qigong is Chinese meditation in motion, an ancient healing art using posture, exercise, breathing, and concentration. This video shows you how to harness the power of qi–the energy of the universe–to heal body and mind. Qigong uses dynamic, gentle movements and meditative postures. The video starts with a warm-up of whole-body breathing. Then master instructor Ken Cohen teaches a selection of exercise sets to cleanse the body, recharge it with fresh qi, circulate qi where it is needed, and disperse stagnant areas. He also teaches a series of healing sounds and techniques of standing meditation and walking meditation, along with posture and self-massage. This is a fine introduction to qigong, with many months of learning in this one 90-minute video. The setting is outdoors and seems Asian, with rocks, greenery, and a wooden bridge. Informational booklet included. –Joan Price
