Question by DP: Martial Arts: Personal Safety/Self Defense?
I’m interested in learning martial arts that leans towards personal safety; something that uses grappling/throws, countering, and possibly not reliant on weapons. Something that IF the need rises to protect myself for any reason, and there is no alternative, that I’m able to get myself out of the situation as clean as possible. I don’t want to completely wreck someone.
I’m 5’11, 122 pounds, 18, male, not super athletic, but I’m not a couch potato either, pretty much average; if that information is needed.
Currently in the central united states.

From what I have read, Tae Quan Do is the best for self defense.

Vist the schools in your area, find an instructor that you respect. Someone which you have confident in their ability and has ability to teach. Talk with the people in his class. Do you have a good feeling about training with them, or do you get an impression that your an outcast. Do you feel that you’ll have to prove yourself before they accept you? Will you be willing to prove yourself? I would say the style is secondary to finding someone you can learn from.
Darren is pretty dead on here. I’d say, just go to local schools, and ask to sit in on a class of theirs. See what they offer, see what they have what you want. It’s not always art dependant, y’know? The way an art has been handed down through the generations makes a difference too. My art generally doesn’t have a lot of grappling or locks, but the way it’s taught gives quite a bit in that regard. So. Yeah. Just see what’s offered and what interests you.
What Darren J said…
Look around for a martial art dojo/dojang/school that is not too far away from where you live, watch several classes, and ask questions. Then go for the one where you thin you’ll be most comfortable training.
