The first part of this book is pretty much a rehash of materials covered in the author’s other works, most of which are found in “Teaching Martial Arts: The Way of the Master” which is a pretty good text in and of itself. The drills, teaching tips, and classroom management techniques are useful. If you have already read “Teaching Martial Arts,” the best part of the first section provides forty ways to disguise repetition. Those tips are creative and useful. There is a little more new material such as weapons training tips, safety concerns, (e.g., avoiding injuries, summer training and dehydration), and dealing with ADD issues with children.

The second half is probably what most folks thinking about this title are actually looking for. It covers public relations, marketing, student retention, instructor survival, hosting tournaments, and leadership. It is pretty well done though I was expecting more on developing business plans, financing, and other administrivia associated with actually operating a dojo rather than just teaching in one. If you run, or are thinking of running a commercial school this is a pretty good resource. If you are struggling with deeper issues such as how to make money from a traditional school without feeling like you are losing your soul then it falls a little short.

Enoida Sensei can be seen in very rare footage preventing a rape in a scene that looks it could have been a screen test for a feature film. It also appears it was to be part of the popular Practical Karate series of books in a film format. For some reason, this was never released or publicly seen.

This 32 minute b/w video shows these masters when they were young, in their late teens or early twenties. Another value of this footage is that it was probably filmed by the late Don F. Draeger.

Junsado Fundamentals, Standing and Ground Combat Reviews

This DVD seems to have evolved from his earlier work. You rarely find DVD’s that contain majority of good moves. This one does not only teach the moves but start to go into principles. The ground portion is interesting as it discusses how to build your own triangular power frame while destroying your opponent’s. While the student would do well to not follow all the moves religiously without personal modification, many principles work well in so many situation but one must do his own thinking. Mr. Kim’s communication is clear and simple. Even though English is not his first language, he does a great job getting the point across.

I have trained in the martial arts for 18 years. I have the rank of 4th Dan black belt. This video has more self-defense, and practical information then I learned in all my training. This video does cover some basics like punching and kicking, but it’s almost all self-defense. This video is worth buying.
