My 4 year old son just started Karate and if they are on good behavior and do good Karate moves they get a stripe at the end of class. The little tape stripes go on the kids’ Karate belts. The more stripes they the closer they get to a new color belt like yellow, orange, etc.
My son and I were running late today for his Karate class. The instructor almost didn’t give my son a stripe at the end of class cuz he didn’t have his Karate uniform on with the belt. My son had on sweat pants and nike shirt on which was fine gym clothes for Karate. The instructor said starting December 1st if a kid doesn’t have uniform on, then no stripe. I pay too much money for those strict rules and my son is only 4 years old. Are the instructors too strict or what?
or am I the one that is wrong? I feel like Karate shouldn’t be like school. It should be just fun and it should be okay if my son doesn’t have his uniform on once in a while…not all the time. Opinions!?
The Fisch- Are u forein cuz I can’t understand you.

a few of the most important teaching points in martial arts are self-discipline and respect. a Strict instructor would not allow a student out of uniform to participate at all.
Usually an instructors goal is not only to provide lessons on self-defense but life-lessons as well.
They really instill respect for parents and the importance of education and following through with commitments. Being on time is showing the person you’re meeting that you respect them, so he was reminding him that he has to follow through with his commitments.
Maybe you need to find a less strict class for him because it only gets more challenging as they move up in levels and it doesn’t sound like you’ll be happy with that.
Karate is fun but there is more to it than just giggles…
Your son should show up ready to work. The stripe is earned and not a freebie. You pay for the teaching and the discipline is part of it.
You are not setting a good example for your son about authority. If you want to play then do not go to a class that teaches respect, discipline, self restraint and honor.
Just play in the park with him.
Well karate needs to be strict so one can learn discipline. I think if it was just once in a blue moon that you didn’t have your karate uniform the instructor shouldn’t make a big deal out of it especially since your son is 4. but if it was on a regular basis i can understand why the instructor is upset. talk to the instructor and just tell him what you think. As long as he knows your son is serious he wont mind so much. I just think he doesn’t want people not taking karate seriously
You pay money so you should respect the fact that the instructor is doing his job instilling self discipline and respect. There are rules that have to be followed throughout life. Even after school activities follow a schedule and you need to respect that. If you as a parent can not handle the rules then take your child out of the class. Even if you put your son in ice skating or horse back riding class there would be rules for him to follow.
Right now your son is not in control of arriving ontime or in uniform is that is to much responsibility for you take him out but remember when he is ready for T-ball he will have a unifrom then too that he will have to wear.
The outfit is part of the class. To karate students – it’s like skates and a stick are to children in hockey. Necessary. You wouldn’t take your child to hockey practice without his skates and sticks, or he wouldn’t be able to practice.
Karate IS fun, but it teaches many things aside from fun – and it also has a great way of teaching parents too, that if they can’t stay on track and keep a schedule – their children are the ones who pay for it. It’s like this for kids all through life – it’s a secret way to teach parents to make sure they have their children ready to participate in whatever activity it is.
If the instructor approached you and criticized you for not having him ready, how would you react? Probably defensively and get upset. If he sends the message through your son, it’s your son you have to answer to – and most parents respond better that way.
He’s not being strict with your son, he’s being strict with you via your son.
